Nanuet is a hamlet, and that matters
Nanuet has no incorporated village government and no court of its own. It sits within the Town of Clarkstown, so a Nanuet claim is heard at the Rockland County Courthouse in New City and a Nanuet ticket is answered at Clarkstown Justice Court, also in New City. The concentration of shopping centers along Route 59 produces a steady volume of premises claims that look nothing like a highway case. Falls in parking lots after snow and ice, unmarked level changes at store entrances, spills left unattended in aisles, and falls on stairs and escalators.
These turn almost entirely on notice: whether the owner created the condition, knew about it, or it existed long enough that they should have known. That is why the timing evidence matters more than the fall itself — incident reports, sweep logs, weather records and security footage that is routinely overwritten within days. Retail properties also layer owner, management company and maintenance contractor, and identifying which one owed the duty is often the whole case.
Ninety days, if a public entity is involved
Clarkstown, Rockland County, the school district and the transit operators are separate entities, each with its own notice requirement. Where any of them may be responsible, a notice of claim is generally required within 90 days under General Municipal Law §50-e — not the three years that applies to an ordinary negligence claim. Where responsibility is genuinely unclear at the deadline, notice goes to every candidate rather than to a best guess.
