A village office, not a highway office
Our Nyack office is on Main Street in the middle of the village, a few doors from the shops and restaurants. People walk in. That is unusual for a personal injury firm and it is deliberate — a good part of our Rockland work has come from people who knew where the office was before they needed it.
The river and the bridge
Nyack sits at the western foot of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, and Route 9W carries the traffic feeding it past the village edge. That produces two very different collision patterns within a mile of each other: highway-speed crashes on the approaches, and low-speed pedestrian and cyclist collisions in a village with narrow streets, angled parking and a great deal of foot traffic.

Treatment and venue
Montefiore Nyack Hospital is in the village. Serious trauma is generally transferred across the river to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, which means records end up with custodians in two counties. Injury claims are heard at the Rockland County Courthouse in New City.

Where a Rockland claim is actually heard
Injury claims from anywhere in Rockland County are filed at the Rockland County Courthouse in New City, not in the village where the accident happened. Nyack’s own justice court handles village-level matters, including traffic tickets, and the two are frequently confused — a ticket answered at the wrong court is treated as no answer at all.
Where a public entity is involved — a village vehicle, a county bus, the school district, a public sidewalk — a notice of claim is generally required within 90 days under General Municipal Law §50-e, not the ordinary three years. In a county built from many small villages and towns, working out which entity maintained the road or sidewalk is the first task in the case, and it is rarely obvious. Nyack village, the Town of Orangetown and Rockland County can each be responsible for different stretches within a few blocks.
Where people are treated
Montefiore Nyack Hospital sits at the top of the village on North Midland Avenue, which means most serious injuries from the bridge approaches and Route 9W arrive there first. Major trauma is transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. That split matters more than it sounds: records for a single accident routinely sit in two hospital systems, and a claim built on only one of them is incomplete.
