The law that applies to your claim
🔴 Nanuet is a hamlet, not a village
This is the single most common mistake with a Nanuet ticket. Nanuet has no incorporated government and no court of its own — it sits within the Town of Clarkstown, so the ticket is answered at Clarkstown Justice Court in New City. Turning up in Nanuet expecting a courtroom is a wasted afternoon, and missing the appearance because you went to the wrong place still counts as a failure to answer.
Clarkstown covers a lot of ground
The town includes Nanuet, New City, Congers, Valley Cottage, Bardonia and West Nyack, so its court handles a substantial volume from a wide area. Calendars are correspondingly busy.
Retail traffic is what generates the tickets
Nanuet is built around a retail corridor. Route 59 runs through it with continuous entrances, constant turning movements and stop-and-go volume, and the shopping traffic feeding it produces a steady stream of signal violations, improper turns and following-too-closely charges.
The Palisades Interstate Parkway and the Thruway are minutes away and supply the higher-speed stops.
What can be negotiated
Rockland is not a TVB county, so a Clarkstown ticket can be reduced. The offense pages set out the penalties — speeding, red light and stop sign.
Our Nanuet office is on Old Turnpike Road, minutes from the New City courthouse.
How long you have to act
- Three years from the date of the accident for most negligence claims (CPLR §214).
- Two years for wrongful death (EPTL §5-4.1).
- 90 days to serve a notice of claim where a city, county, school district, transit authority or other public body is involved (General Municipal Law §50-e), with suit generally within one year and 90 days.
The 90-day rule is the one that quietly ends otherwise strong cases. If a public entity may be involved, that is the first thing to check — not the last.
What it costs
Nothing up front. These cases are handled on contingency: there is no fee unless we win, and the consultation is free. You will be told the percentage and how expenses are handled, in writing, before you sign anything.
Common questions
Where exactly do I go?
Clarkstown Justice Court in New City — not Nanuet. Check the return address on the ticket itself, which will say Clarkstown.
I went to the wrong place and missed the date.
That is treated as a failure to answer and can suspend your license. It can usually be reopened, but do it immediately.
Is a Nanuet ticket handled differently from a village ticket?
The negotiation is similar, but Clarkstown is a busy town court covering several communities rather than a small village calendar.
