Rear-End Collision on I95 Kills New Rochelle Man

Rear-end collisions are very common. In fact, they comprise up to 28% of all car accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Many of these accidents are minor, but some can result in serious injuries and even death.

This is the case in a recent rear-end crash on I95 in Stamford, CT, where a New Rochelle man was killed while sitting in the back seat of a Ford Fiesta. The car was rear-ended and pushed into the median where it slammed into a concrete barrier. Two other vehicle occupants were injured seriously but are expected to recover.

The Fiesta was the middle vehicle in a three-car accident. A Jeep ahead of the Fiesta stopped for traffic, as did the Fiesta. However, a large Chevy Suburban did not stop and hit the small car from the rear.

Although the cause of the Stamford accident has not yet been determined, driver distraction including texting is often the cause of rear-end collisions. Other causes include tailgating or following too closely, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and fatigue. Some causes are out of the driver’s control such as mechanical failure and poor road or weather conditions.

Severe Injuries May Result from Rear-End Crashes

Because the vehicle is hit from behind, whiplash is a common injury as the body jerks forward causing the head and neck to whip back and forth. Whiplash injuries can include ligament, nerve and muscle damage.

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is another frequent consequence of a rear-end accident. In a TBI, the brain hits against the inside of the skull causing life-altering brain damage that can result in paralysis or even death.

Other serious injuries include bone fractures, lacerations and spinal cord damage. Any injury can be made even worse if the head restraints are insufficient or if seat belts are not worn.

It’s Important To Get Medical Care Even If You Don’t Feel Injured

Sometimes victims of a rear-end collision won’t feel that they have been injured because symptoms like pain and stiffness may be delayed. This is especially true in a low-speed rear-end crash.

However, to take care of any possible injury and to document your injury for the insurance company or a legal claim, be sure to obtain medical care at an emergency room, urgent care center or your own doctor as soon as possible.
