Intersections without stop lights are also a cause of traffic accidents, since drivers try to race into traffic when it’s busy. The evening rush hour, between 5 and 6pm, is statistically one of the most dangerous times to drive, and the commuter suburbs of Westchester and Rockland counties are among the most accident-prone roads in the state of New York. Car Accidents in Lower Hudson Valley
Between 2007 and the first quarter of 2011, there were 11,199 car accidents during 5 and 6pm, and 10,000 car accidents between 3 and 5pm.

Westchester County
On Route 6, along the Yorktown-Cortlandt border, there were 67 car accidents in a third of a mile stretch of road during a two year time period. This section of highway is stop and go traffic, which leads to accidents. During the mid-1990s, a section of Route 6 was expanded to four lanes to help improve the safety of the area, and there are other projects in progress for the area although tight budget constraints are making them difficult to complete.
Saw Mill River Parkway is also considered a high risk area for car accidents, particularly where the road meets the Cross County Parkway in Yonkers. A rebuilding of ramps in this area is scheduled to begin in 2013.

Rockland County
Six different sites in the past three years, along Route 59 in Ramapo, Clarkstown and Spring Valley, made the government Five Percent Reports list. This list shows where car accidents and collisions occur and is intended to show which roadways and intersections are more dangerous than the other 95% of roadways in the state of New York. Car accidents on Route 59 tend to happen around the entrances and exits for the NYS Thruway.
