It’s Hurricane Season – How To Get Ready

The last few years have brought relatively calm hurricane seasons to the metropolitan New York City area. We have experienced some extra rain and minor flooding from storms like Maria, Gordon, and Michael, but nothing like our neighbors to the south have faced.

But now is not the time to get complacent about serious storms. It has been only 7 years since Hurricane Sandy made landfall near Atlantic City and devastated Manhattan and Long Island, as well as low-lying areas of New Jersey and New York. Less than 10 months earlier, tropical storm Irene landed on Coney Island, flooding the island, Long Beach and the Hudson River. Irene also had a major impact on upstate New York where authorities issued a tropical storm warning for the very first time.

So our area is not immune to hurricanes and other severe storms. The 2019 hurricane season began on June 1, and we have already had our first subtropical storm – Andrea, which formed on May 20th. Forecasters predict above-average activity this year with 14 named storms, including 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.

Tips on Preparing for a Hurricane

Take steps to prepare now before it is too late:

  • Learn the hurricane evacuation zone, destination, and route for New York CityWestchester, and Rockland.
  • Create a “grab and go” emergency kit. Include a 3-day supply of water, first aid kit, flashlights with batteries, battery-operated radio, baby supplies, and medications.
  • Keep your car filled with gas. Prep your generators and fill gas cans. Keep your phone charged and have a portable cellphone charger ready. Keep some cash on hand.
  • During a power outage, drink only bottled water but save containers including your bathtub for flushing and washing.
  • Be prepared to safeguard your property and home. You will need to secure or bring inside everything that is outdoors, like furniture, toys, and hoses.
