February 7, 2022 | Slip and Fall
Summer is the time to gather with family and friends outside for parties, food and fun. Before everyone gets too comfortable, make certain your yard is safe. It may be the last thing you want to think about, but don’t let your get together be the one remembered for slip and fall accidents and other injuries. There are precautions the host needs to take to accident proof your yard:
Safeguard Your Deck
Now is the time to tend to any loose boards, replace rotten wood, and hammer in any nails that are sticking out. Secure railings and make sure they are at least three feet high.
Proper Lighting
If you’re partying into the night, everyone should be able to see where they are going to avoid trips or collisions with objects or landscaping in the yard. All paths and outdoor stairways should be lit. Invest in outdoor LED or solar lights.
Secure Decorations
Outdoor items like tiki torches can add nice ambience to the yard, but can also cause fires and burns, as well as be an obstacle that one could trip over or collide with. Make sure anything you have chosen to add character to the yard are far enough away from where people are walking and are properly staked into the ground.
Pool Area
The CDC reported that 30% of unintentional injury deaths among children aged 1-4 were the result of drowning, mostly in home swimming pools. Barriers reduce the risk of an accident by 83%. Areas near in ground pools especially must be kept dry to prevents slips and falls, which could lead to injuries or drowning. Fences are required and adding lights to this area is important for evening. Keep emergency flotation devices accessible.
